This role will report to our Brand & Design Lead, Gigi Burkhalter. We are a small team of 5, so you will be our 2nd Marketing hire!

Location

We are based in Durham, NC but our team often works remotely. You are welcome to work remotely using Zoom conference calls and Slack to communicate.

Long-Term Potential

Koru is a growing company with tech needs that will continue to increase. There is potential for this to turn into a paid part-time or full-time position.

Backend Developer Intern

The Center for Koru Mindfulness is seeking a Backend Developer Intern to support our Senior Backend Developer from January 2018 to March 2018.

This role will report to our Senior Backend Developer (+30 years of experience). We are a small team of 5, so you will be our 2nd Tech hire!

Primary Objective

You will support our Senior Backend Developer in rewriting our existing code base from PHP to Python. This is a critically important project for Koru Mindfulness. Your work will have an immediate and tangible impact on thousands of students and teachers, and can positively influence those for years to come.

We would like for this internship to run January to March 2018, although we are flexible for the right candidate.

Our Technology

We have a proprietary Teacher Dashboard web app that allows our Koru Teachers to easily:

  • Register and Pay for upcoming Teacher Trainings
  • Access Resources and Materials for teaching their Courses
  • Create and manage their courses through our Course Management System
  • Communicate with their students and view their students’ digital logbooks
  • Converse with other teachers through a Discussion Forum

In January 2017 we launched our first iOS and Android Koru Mindfulness Apps. These free apps allow students to listen to guided meditations, track their meditation practice, and review skills and tips. If students are registered for a Koru class, they can share their logbook with their teacher.

Our Current Codebase

We have one server (and a “staging” clone of it) and one MySQL database (and a “staging” clone). All of the web-connected code is written in the PHP programming language. There are three distinct backend systems written in PHP: WordPress, our Teacher Dashboard, and our API.

Both our Dashboard and API use Yii. Yii is a PHP “Framework.” Yii code presents challenges to the stability, maintenance, scalability and further development or our backend code. That is why we are rewriting our codebase into Python.

Project Scope

Our new architecture envisions converting both the iOS/Android backend and the Dashboard sections currently written with Yii to call a new backend data-only API, perhaps using Amazon’s AWS “serverless” architecture (S3, CloudFront, RDS (database), API Gateway, Lambda). This would provide the same JSON data communication we currently use in the iOS/Android API.

The Dashboard would more significantly change, with WordPress creating at least the “Shell” (site-wide menus and sidebar, perhaps including placeholders) for each page with the actual page data being used to fill out the WordPress-created template. A WordPress plugin can be used to pull in the JavaScript needed to connect to our backend data API.

Summary:

  • Teacher Course Management System (Dashboard web app)
currently Yii > convert to Python
  • API accessed by Android/iOS Apps
currently Yii > convert to Python

Throughout the project, you will work with our Senior Backend Developer who will provide direction and support.

Course Credit
